Best travel grill around! Weber Charcoal GoAnywhere 121020 Grill I have two small grills, but this is the only travel grill I own, and it is amazing. You'd think a small grill wo...

I purchased this grill about a year ago for several reasons. I love to grill and after leaving my old grill at a home I sold, I needed a new one. I had the benefit of recently eating at a friend’s house whereby he prepared my steak dinner on his large and very expensive grill. His grill was different that other grills I had seen to date; his grill didn’t have those typical flame burners I was familiar with. Rather, his grill utilized infra-red technology. Essentially, burning heats up a ceramic honeycomb at the bottom of the grill creating a much hotter temperature (over 800 degrees fahrenheit) with no visible flame - it just glows orange.

The result of the infra-red burner was a steak so delicious I couldn’t believe it was made at home. The heat instantly sears the outside, preventing dessication of the flesh. This type of cooking is utilized at many famous steak houses, such as Ruth’s Chris and Charlie’s. My townhome has two balconies, either of which would be dwarfed by a typical sized grill. I was sold on the infra-red cooking method and just had to get my next grill with this technology.

The grill I bought from delivered the goods! Wow, am I impressed with the food that came off this…from kabobs, to chicken to steak. Delicious! The food lays on stainless steel grates which are V-shaped. The V-Shape collects dripping juices and reintroduces the smoke from these juices to the food being cooked. The results are wonderful. Taste-wise and convenience-wise, I couldn’t be happy. The lovely stainless steel build of the grill has no problem standing up to the Denver, Colorado winter. When sunny days come (even mid-winter) I simply fire the grill up!

The grill has been wonderful, though there are a few design flaws which had become apparent in my use. The stainless steel grates can quickly become covered in food residue, either partially cooked or “charcoalized”. This food residue is hard to clean off, though I typically fire up the grill for a few minutes with the cover down to burn off the residue. Dripping grease on the ceramic honeycomb burner can cause minor flare-ups. Make sure you have a grease cup under the lowest corner of the grill as it will eventually drip out (no built-in grease drain mechanism comes with the grill). The electronic (battery-powered) ignition worked great for 10 months - then simply quit. A replacement electronic spark module costs over $45.00 (so I passed and light the grill with a long-reach butane lighter).

The grill is small and relatively light such that one could bring it on camping trips, tail-gate parties, etc. It works perfectly for my townhouse needs, and would probably work perfectly for a larger home as either a second grill or a grill for one or two people to cook on versus a whole family. All in all, I’ve been happy with my purchase of this premium grille. I’ll never go back to flame burner style grilles and will recommend infra-red technology to everyone except slow-cooking bar-b-que folks.
