After many years with cheapy Walmart charcoal grills, finally purchased a weber. Wow! The most difficult part was deciding which model / features to purchase.
As you probably already know, they ARE pricey, but well worth the money. Almost everyone I know or review I’ve read about a Weber, states that their grill has lasted them %26gt; 10 years! Not bad for a barbecue!
I purchased the One Touch Gold 22 1/2 . I ruled out the Silver model because of the many reviews of ash falling outside of the plate area. Having a wood deck, this was a definite no-no. I was also contemplating the Platinum model, as essentially its the same grill 22 1/2, bucket to catch the ashes, and the slider and bricket holder add-ons included. I compared the prices (in Canadian $$), and purchasing all the accessories separately would be $170 dollars cheaper than the Platinum. So basically, I am paying $170CDN for the side table. I figured I could spend that money on an actual table, so I went with the GOLD model.
The assembly of this grill was a joke! It was practically already assembled. You just stick in the legs (which admitedly is a little difficult to attach to the base, but a little oil does the trick). After that, attach the wheels, and that’s it! Anyone having great difficulty assembling this, would have difficulty assembling ANY grill on the market.
I purchased the following accessories as well:
Slider assembly to hold the lid (I wasn’t satisfied with the welded hook in the cover)
Indirect cooking briquet holder
Nylon cover (for our cold canadian winters!)
Charcoal starter chimney (The new performance model has a gas starter for the charcoal. I prefer this cheaper and convenient chimney. now you can also add hot coals, where the performance you would have to add unlit coals).
Ironically, the performance section has very little content, because what can I say, it performs like magic. Heat distribution is great, the bucket to catch the ash is so convenient. Food never tasted better! Cleanup is really easy, oh and the 22 1/2 is very nice size to cook for many guests.
For some reason, the 18 inch grill (GOLD as well) is smaller in height than the 22 inch grill. For a tall person, this is anoying. This is another reason I purchased the 22 1/2 grill.
Conclusion: Definately recommend this product for any serious charcoal grilling. The only choice is which model. I recommend the GOLD vs. the SILVER because the bucket is really much better than the plate for catching ash. The Performance series is way too $$$$$, using gas to start the charcoal. The Platinum series has an attached table/cart, but adds $170 to the price after buying all similar accessories. For me, the GOLD was the best choice!
