We purchased a lake house that had a BGE on the back deck that the previous owners left. I thought this thing is useless and it needs to go “after all we have a propane grill”. It was dirty, the grate was caked with junk, hinges were rusty, it was a mess. After several weeks of using our gas grill my wife decided to cook some ribs. I said lets try the thing and see if it works before we get rid of it. I cleaned it out, lubed the hinges and cleaned the grate and we cooked the ribs.

So much for using the gas grill ever again except to grill burgers and hot dogs, because I am hooked. It was easy to get the fire started, we did use lighter fluid but I am getting an electric starter, very easy to regulate the temp by controlling the bottom slid vent and the daisy wheel top and we did not have to keep adding charcoal and water like other smokers. Placing the soaked hickory chips on top of the coals made for a great taste. The ribs stayed moist and the flavor was terrific and I don’t really like ribs but these were tender and even I liked them, now for a good brisket.

The size of the cooking surface on the large BGE is 18 1/2″ with plenty of vertical height to cook a turkey on a rack neck up. It is not difficult to remove the fire box to clean the inside and the outside is glazed and just wipes off. You can purchase an additional grate that extends above the other grate to cook bread, corn, vegies etc.

I have since ordered a fish grate, ash tool and turkey stand am also going to get one for the house because it is the only way to BBQ! I do need to replace the slide vent because it has rusted through but that is not a big deal. It would be nice for the company to have a online parts ordering (like the slide vent) but maybe that will come later.
