Grilling Delight Weber Ranch Kettle Grill We had our Weber Kettle for so many years I don't remember. It has a large cooking surface and I like that it has ...
My husband and I thought that Weber made the best of charcoal grills and Weber has been the only brand we have bought for the last 15 years. Last year we purchased a Weber One-Touch Charcoal grill only to have a bear tumble it down our mountain cliff, simply because we left a lonely beef rib in it and forgot about it. So much for our new Weber.
Trying to find grills at summers end is not easy since the stores do not restock summer items with the winter months soon approaching.
I came across the Char-Broil Charcoal Kettle Grill that looked exactly like our Weber with the kettle type shape except it had a few features that our Weber did not have.
Grill Details
This is a kettle style grill meaning large round deep bowl shape.
Instead of the open ash catcher than the Weber had, this one offers a removable enclosed porcelain ash catcher that is easy to discard the ashes. The Webers was just an ash catch tray open to the wind.
Also, this offers a bottom stainless steel grate connected to the legs to place any trays or barbeque utensils you may have. The Weber did not have this.
Along with the Weber, the Char-Broil Charcoal Kettle Grill, Model 81-23069 offers a chrome adjustable air vent for your temperature control on the top of the sturdy kettle lid. The air vent is to control how much smoke you want to stay in the grill. However unlike the Weber, the air circulation that determines how much heat or fire you want within the grill is controlled by 2 sliding vents on your enamel ash catcher container.
This grill is well made with 4 legs offering 2 rolling casters and 2 stationary feet. The Weber had 3 legs that had 2 rolling casters and 1 stationary leg.
There are 2 solid handles offering a place to hang your barbeque utensils.
There is a cooking grid height adjustor inside the grill meaning you can lower or raise your cooking grid to be higher or lower to the coals.
The depth and width of this grill is 18.5 inches and the weight is approximately 24 pounds.
The assembly instructions were complete and assembly took about ½ hour.
I have seen these all in black or a black bottom kettle with a red lid.
This is a perfect size for serving 1-4 people. The grill is large enough for 4 good size rib-eye steaks laid out all nice and juicy sizzling over the charcoal with the hickory wood chips.
With the Char-Broil Kettle Charcoal Grill, it is portable enough to take with you on camping trips or to the beach. Try to do this with one of those huge gas grills that cost about as much as an inside cooking range.
This model is also known as THR-1850, the TR meaning the Thermos Company is somehow connected with Char-Broil.
Why Buy a Charcoal Grill over a Gas Grill?
1) Flavor, flavor and more flavor
2) Costs
3) Portability
4) Space
5) Try transporting a gas grill
Our Char-Broil charcoal grill cost us $35. Gas grills start at around $400 and I seriously doubt they will last a lifetime without a problem to spend that type of money for less flavor. If I wanted the flavor of a non-charcoal grill, I would just use my Jenn-Air grill on my range.
Nothing beats grilling over charcoal. The flavor and juiciness of meats is like no other gas grill can over, especially if you add hickory chips to your charcoal. A taste like no other!
Portable Charcoal Grills over Brick Enclosed Charcoal Grill
When we designed our current home, my husband had always wanted a brick barbeque, so this is what was designed into the side of our home next to our fireplace.
Hubby soon became unhappy with his new brick charcoal grill. No matter what he did either the meat would catch on fire with the door shut or leaving the door off, it would take forever to grill. He started grilling less due to this fact and gave up claiming he wanted to go back to his old style of grilling, therefore after 2 years of this, I bought the Weber and a few months later the Char-Broil.
Final Thoughts
Even though my husband was very hesitant to try a different brand of grill, other than a Weber, he was very surprised and actually happier with the Char-Broil Kettle Grill when grilling and especially when having that first taste of flavorful meat. At that point, he knew the bear actually did us a favor for we would have never thought of changing brands.
If this grill sounds good for you, but you are thinking it is a tad too small for your needs, Char-Broil does make this same grill in a 22.5-inch size.
Happy grilling!
