We were looking for an electric smoker with a variable thermostat priced under $100 that was of the “bullet” type design (cylindrical with dome lid) and this was the only one out there that fit the criteria. Ordered it sight unseen from an on-line vendor and it arrived about a week later.
The body of the Meco measures 16″ dia. by 28″ height with the legs and top handle bringing the overall height to 36″. It comes with a 5.5 qt. water pan (this design of smoker is not as sealed as most “cabinet” types and so having a moisture source makes all the difference) plus two nickel plated grills. Total area of the two grills is 351 sq. inches. Our 14.5 pound turkey had plenty of room to spare on the top grill and there was plenty of room on the lower grill for a couple chickens or whatever.
Speaking of grills - the Meco can be converted to an electric grill by simply twisting off the upper section of the body. All but the bottom 4″ comes off leaving the section with heating element.
This product is fairly well made compared with the others I looked at (that didn’t have the variable thermostat) and went together easily although be prepared for lots of screws. It arrived with a few minor dings from shipping that I pounded out but nothing of significant concern or that was attributable to the design or manufacturer.
Regarding the variable thermostat, we found that, along with the two adjustable vents on the cover, we were able to get fairly precise temperature control. Started out on the “high” setting (1650 watts) but was able to back off to just below the “medium” setting after a half hour or so to keep it solidly in the ideal temperature range. A couple minor complaints: First, the electrical cord at 6′ is a bit short and, second, the instruction booklet needs to be updated in a couple places. Nothing serious and typical of a lot of these products that go through regular upgrades. While this design is inherently “leaky” of smoke (comes out around the dome lid) it was easy on the wood chunks with only 4 or 5 required for about 9 hours work.
