I purchased a large grill/smoker for my husband for Father’s Day. He enjoys grilling and, while I consider myself a very good cook, I have never mastered the outdoor grill. The Egg promised to be idiot-proof, so I thought it would be a purchase we could both enjoy.

The Egg is fascinating. It’s history is rooted back to Japanese and Chinese kamado ceramic cookers. The Egg is made of ceramic that are stronger than ordinary clay ceramics and can withstand very high temperatures without weakening. The ceramics of the Egg are patented and come with a lifetime warranty.

The ceramics of the Egg retain, circulate and radiate heat evenly, eliminating the need for a rotisserie. It also guards against food shrinkage and foods stay moist and flavorful.

Other Egg Facts:

-No lighter fluid is needed for starting the Egg’s

-The Egg is ready to cook in 10 minutes or less

-The ceramic walls retain heat and allow for precise temperature control

-The Egg has no “hot spots”

-The Egg uses very little . It uses a natural specifically for the Egg and produces little ash. It can also be reused until the is completely gone.

-The Egg is self cleaning

-It needs no water for clean-up…just brush the cooking grate

-The Egg smothers grease flare ups

-The surface of the Egg stays cooler than conventional grills

-The Egg can be used in all weather

-The Egg won’t rust or wear out

The Egg is so simple to use, even I can use it. You place the natural in the firebox, filling it to about an inch above the airholes. You won’t have to add more during cooking, as the Egg’s will burn for hours.

Next, you remove the ceramic damper top. (Some Eggs, like ours, came with a daisy-wheel top. If you have that top, just slide the vent open.) Raise the hinged lid and slide the draft door open to allow for maximum air flow.

Start the using an starter or starters (which is what we used). You don’t have to wait for the to turn ashy or for all of the to glow. The Egg will be ready in about 10 minutes.

The Egg has a temperature gauge in the top so you can easily read what temperature you have inside the Egg. You can smoke food at the lower temps (100-300 degrees) or open those drafts to reach higher temperatures. The Egg can accurately measure temperatures to 750 degrees Farenheit. The higher temps are great for searing food. You can also keep food warm at lower temperatures just by closing the vents.

The Egg has lots of “Egg-cessories.” We also purchased a “nest” which is a metal carrier that raises the Egg to working level and can be rolled from place to place. But remember, you are rolling a 150 pound item, so it’s not the easiest thing to move. We also got the Egg Mate, which are “wings” made out of that fit as side panels and attach to the Egg. They provide extra working space.

Other Egg-cessories include a meat thermometer, ash tool, grill gripper, starter, vertical roasters, a V-rack for smoking meats and a fish grid. You can also purchase a vinyl Egg cover to keep dust, bird stuff and other things off of your Egg.

The Egg is easy to use. It does reach its temperature as quickly as promised, making timing the cooking of foods a cinch. You don’t have to worry about the burning down too quickly or going out, thanks to the technology of the Egg and its natural . The cookbook that comes with the Egg has lots of great recipes for everything from beef, ham, pork and venison to fish and vegetables. I’ve tried several and all were delicious. The Egg also comes with an instructional video that explains the science behind the egg and shows you detailed cooking instructions.

The bottom line is that the is an advanced griller/smoker built on very old principals. It is fun to look at, easy to use and pretty much fool-proof. Whether you are a grill nut or a novice like me, you’ll enjoy using the .
