I bought this grill several years ago while living in a tiny Los Angeles apartment with only a balcony to use for grilling. I bought it off the web from some company in a small Texas town I’d never heard of. I spent a fortune on shipping, heavy as it is, but no barbeque store in LA stocked it at the time. Who could blame them? No stainless steel, no thousand dollar price tag — what self-respecting urban hipster would buy it?
There was a similar, fashionable product for sale in the ’70’s known as an Hibachi. I don’t know why they stopped making them and why the many which were sold are no longer in use. I recall grilling on a friend’s Hibachi as a teenager in the late ’80s with satisfactory results. This product, based on those recollections, is a somewhat sturdier version of that.
For a situation with very limited space and a need to grill for only 1 or 2 people, this is absolutely the best choice out there. Even the smallest Weber, decent grill though it is, is larger. Though I haven’t tried any, the small electric and propane grills on the market appear flimsy and probably don’t perform well. And let’s face it, there’s no substitute for charcoal.
The construction is predominantly cast iron, so seasoning and oiling are indicated. The handle can’t support the weight of the grill and broke in short order, though most people won’t move it often anyway. Since there’s no cover, the grill burns a lot of charcoal and it takes a bit of practice to regulate the cooking temperature. And of course the more charcoal you burn, the more smoke you’ll have. Not big problems, but good to know. I recommend using it a few times by oneself before grilling for a guest.
I’ve since moved to another city where space is nowhere near as precious. I’ve bought a Weber for entertaining, but I still occasionally use this product when I’m alone. It will probably outlive me.
