My gas grill gave out on me two years ago and since I don’t know how to cook in the kitchen and I wasn’t married to my great wife yet, I needed a cheap but durable grill to tide me over. After searching several models I settled on this Weber grill.
Since it is a smaller grill it was easy to fit in my car and bring home. I opened up the box and assembly was a breeze and I put my first charcoal in the grill that night. After cleaning the cooking surface of any residual grease I was ready to go. It was a year of cooking bliss on my apartment patio. Then I got married and moved to a house and discovered a few things:
The Good:
Amazing flavor, charcoal grilling is just far superior to gas grilling.
Nice wooden handle on the cover keeps your hand from being burnt.
Ash handle on the bottom does a very good job of moving the three ash clearing blades inside the grill and will even crush small pieces of charcoal that get caught in the blades.
The cooking grill is easy to remove, clean and replace, just be careful when the grill is going and you replace it.
The Bad:
This grill is small and light and that makes it prone to being blown over by high winds. My backyard has no place to shelter the grill and so every couple of months I needed to stand the grill back up and dump out the charcoal that got rain soaked. I have since weighted down the grill with some rocks, but it still blows over occasionally.
This isn’t the easiest grill to roll, it feels like it wants to tip over when being moved.
The ash catcher is not the best on this grill, it has a narrow diameter and if there is even a moderate wind, very little of the ash actually ends up in the catcher.
The cooking surface is fairly close to the charcoal and this can lead to burning of the food on the outside while the inside is still cooking. This is pretty mild and I easily adjusted to this and learned that you don’t need a lot of charcoal in this grill to make it really hot and cook effectively.
Small cooking surface only makes this grill useful for 1-4 people.
Burning Charcoal is bad for the environment, but I try to compensate in other areas to make up for this one luxury. I don’t feel too bad driving a car that gets 26mpg and burning charcoal twice a month when I see my neighbor burning his gas grill(and telling me it is better for the environment). I just smile and wave back and look at his two SUVs in his driveway that can’t get more than 15-20mpg.
Summary:
This is a great grill for a small get together of up to 4 people, beyond that you’ll need more cooking surface to feed your guests in under 2 hours. Durable grill, but prone to falling over in high winds, weight it down.
If you are single or have a small family, this is a great grill. If you are a larger family or like to have big cookout parties, you definitely need a bigger grill.
