This is a long term review of the coleman roadtrip grill.
I discovered this grill in the coleman outlet store 4 years ago by accident. I was looking for a grill that would work in any weather and was small enough to take any place. I also had a full-size grill that I was going to replace also. At the time I had no idea that this roadtrip grill would be able to do 95% of all the cooking I needed to be able to do. Because I was at the outlet store I was able to try all the accessories for the roadtrip line of grills. I left the store with the grill and the optional grates. Even though they say they are for the 2 burner model they fit in the single burner model and work just fine. In 4 years of heavy use I have only had to replace the burner 1 time and that was last summer. It cost a whole $10.
It is possible to do indirect cooking on a single burner grill you just have to use the standard grate and stack one of the optional grates on top of it. Because of the grills design it can be used on a table top or by using the included legs. This grill is half the price of the weber. Has more grate options. There is the standard full size grate. The half size grate that comes in stick free and cast iron, and there is the half size griddle grate. I typically use the griddle grate on one side and a cast iron grate on the other side. Additionally the roadtrip comes with legs and for the weber that is a $40 option. I never intended for this grill to be my primary grill and I did purchase a full-size grill but, the ease of use for the roadtrip and the fact that it cooks so fast has my full size grill jealous. The roadtrip grill is also fuel efficient I have grilled at 3 large family reunions with this grill and never burned more than 3 1 pound bottle with the grill running better than 8 hours. I do notice however that the grill gets hotter with the full-size tank attached than with the bottles. The grill has also evolved over the years and it is good to see that coleman listens to it’s customers. I have made one modification to the grill and that is I added a temperature gauge. The newer roadtrip grills now come with one. The negatives against this grill do have a work around. You can cook a full-size chicken on the grill. (the work around is to cut it up) You cant do indirect cooking(yes you can I covered that) You cant smoke with this grill (yes you can, just get a tuna can and soak your wood chips and place in the can and set in the back of the grill. You cant warm bread while cooking (yes you can just stack the griddle grate over the regular grate. This has the effect of lowering the temperature ) The major difference I see between this roadtrip and the new ones is that this one can cook with the top down. Would I buy it again. In a heart beat. I have sold so many of these for coleman that they should give me a comission.
