For those who are tired of those cheap little hibachi-style gas grills, Coleman’s RoadTrip grill is a godsend.

Unlike conventional gas or charcoal grills which are difficult or downright impossible to lug around, the RoadTrip grill’s main selling point is its portability. The grill’s base includes legs that fold in and detachable side tables. The grill’s top locks down and the entire unit can fit in the trunk of a car.

For cooking, the grill has an ample surface area to cook multiple pieces of food. The RoadTrip grill also has two independent burners so chefs can use higher or lower heat on different halves of the grill at their discretion. Other nice touches include push-button ignition, the ability to mix and match cooking surfaces (grill, griddle, and stove), removable grease drip pan, and hooks for cooking utensils.

Throughout the 2003 football season, the grill performed admirably through all types of weather. Foods cooked easily and thoroughly on the grill. The interchangable surfaces were especially handy for cooking breakfast foods earlier in the day, then switching to standard grilled fare later. They can also be removed for cleaning. The grill’s base and legs are extremely stable, though if not set up properly, may have a “wobble” factor. Most of the grill’s surfaces are easy to clean and maintain, needing mostly a cursory wipe-down with some standard cleaner. The grill can also be adapted to use larger propane tanks with an optional attachment.

The grill also garnered a high “wow”-factor for passersby, as large portable grills such as these have not yet entirely replaced their hibachi brothers in tailgates around the country. Its bright blue shell is also very attractive.

The unit does, however, have some slight drawbacks. The grill’s surfaces are difficult to clean, and sauces tend to cake on the surfaces during cooking. Because the surfaces are smaller, they can be soaked in a sink and placed in dishwashers.

Coleman only includes a griddle and a grill surface with the RoadTrip grill, which is similar to the competing Thermos Fire %26 Ice Grill. The only difference is that users of the Fire %26 Ice Grill are stuck with the built-in grill/griddle configuration, while Coleman users are not. Coleman doesn’t include accessories with their grill, and new owners will probably want to opt for an extra grill surface ($20) as well as the wheeled carrying case ($35). The wheeled carrying case is also difficult to store in an upright position, due to the wheels. These accessories, however, are not as easy to find in stores.

Although the legs of the grill are metal, the rest of the grill base is plastic. The plastic base easily scratches as an owner must flip in over in the ground in order to open the legs during the setup process.

Finally, the grill’s two burners sometimes do not provide adequate heat coverage, as food in the center tends to cook more slowly than food closer to the burner.
