Back in ‘89 I had a brand new gas grill - but not for long. One day I clicked the ignitor and WHOOSH! The pressure regulator had malfunctioned and the gas flame looked more like a blow torch. Needless to say, I sold that grill and switched to a Weber charcoal grill.
I’m glad I switched as charcoal grilling has a much better flavor than gas cooking and is much safer to use too. Because these grills have lids, there are no flare-ups when cooking. You just put the meat on the grill, cover it, flip it once during the cooking process and voila - it’s done. When you’re finished cooking, just close the vents and put the lid back on - the charcoal extinguishes quickly and can be used again. Just 10 lbs. of charcoal lasts me an entire summer and I use the grill frequently.
My Weber is the 18 1/2" diameter size and is a perfect size for up to 4 people. If you have a larger family, I recommend getting the 22 1/2" size.
I have cooked everything from burgers to roast beef with excellent results. I bought the extra accessories for indirect cooking but tossed them. Instead, just use a throw-away shallow aluminum baking pan in the center of the bottom rack and place the charcoal around the pan - works just as well.
My Weber has been outside in the elements for 11 straight years. I even use it during the winter as long as the snow isn’t too deep. The handles have weathered to a nice gray tone, but are still in good shape. The porcelain coating is like new. I’ve replaced the cooking surface a couple of times as it gets so crusty I can’t get it clean no matter what I use on it.
I will be replacing it soon with a One Touch Gold Weber, as I do have one complaint about this grill. When emptying the ash catcher, the ashes scatter quite a bit especially on a windy day. The better model has an ash catcher that is totally enclosed and I think I’ll like this one even more!
