Best Charcoal Grill in the World! Weber OneTouch Gold 22.5 Grill My wife and kids got me the One Touch Gold for my birthday. I have owned my share of charcoal grills over the year...
I have been looking into getting a grill for a couple of months now. The real question in my mind was between gas and charcoal based grills. They certainly have both their advantages and disadvantages (perhaps there should be a discussion topic on this). Charcoal is cheaper at the beginning, but charcoal can cost you a bunch in the long run. Gas is quicker and easier, but is more likely to break. I guess what it really comes down to is personal preference. I have worked with both before and I can say that either way the food tastes better than if it were in the oven!
But back to my dilemma gas or charcoal? My father has used charcoal for years and thus so have I. We have had the same Weber grill for years now and there have been no problems with rusting or anything like that. Luckily my procrastination paid off as I received a Weber charcoal grill for Christmas (from my father). The grill itself came in a relatively small box for such a big appliance. One thing that I have found with gas grills is that they are a royal pain in the ass to put together. Not only that, if it is put together wrong you are screwed! Well this Weber grill was a cinch to assemble. Within 20 minutes I was ready to grill.
The grill itself looks very classy when put together. The grill I have is all black and is on wheels. The wheels themselves are all right, but it is still a pain in the butt to roll the grill around. If you can I would suggest keeping it is the same place. The ash pan (where the spent ashes are collected) sits directly below the grill and is easy to remove for ash disposal. The pan itself is made of very flimsy aluminum and I am sure it will need to be replaced sooner rather than later. The lid is easy to remove and is not very heavy. However it is very sturdy and can take abuse. The lid is not actually attached to the grill like many gas grills and can be completely removed. Instead you can hang the lid on the grill itself when you need it out of the way. Inside the grill there are two different grates; one for the charcoal and one for your food. The charcoal grate fits kinda of loosely on my model, but the food grate is a perfect fit.
Well now for the real test how well does this baby cook? The Weber grill is a joy to cook on. The lid forms a nice tight seal so that heat is properly contained within the grill. If you need to stoke the coals a bit, the food grate is easily removed (just make sure you use hot pads!). You can cook using two different methods; direct or indirect. Direct is for steak or burgers, while indirect allows you to cook roasts, turkey, and things that are typically cooked in the oven. I believe that cooking time is faster than in an oven. The grill could use a couple of things to make it my ultimate cooking machine. It would be nice if there was a rack that comes with the grill that could hold a plate for me. I am sure that I can find something that will work, but if it came with it I would be much happier. Also, the ash tray is a bit flimsy (as mentioned above) and I would be better served by sturdier tray. Overall though I must say that the Weber grill is a great purchase. For under $100 you get the joy of cooking outdoors as well as the better taste that comes with a grill. Also, my family has used these grills for years and they will last you a long time. A very worthy investment!
