After giving it some thought of what to get my husband this fathers day I decided on the Brinkmann Sportsman Charcoal Double-Grill Smoker and Grill.
Our family loves to eat barbecue. We have a gas grill but somehow it never tastes like our favorite barbecue restaurant. We have tried the smoker boxes you put in the barbecue but it still doesn’t get that flavor that the restaurants do when they smoke their meats for hours. So I bought this with dreams that I can make savory smoked baby back rib dinners like the pro’s!
The Features
The smoker comes disassembled and took my husband 30 minutes to fully assemble it. It would probably take less time if you don’t have a 2 year old "helping".
The bottom is where the charcoal is and comes off easily to add more charcoal and wood. This can be used separately as a regular grill and is small enough to take along as a portable grill. Used this way it is only 12" high. It can hold 10-15 lbs. of charcoal.
The smoker body which is about 2 1/2 feet high fits snuggly on the charcoal pan and holds a porcelain water pan inside and 2 chrome cooking grills. The grills can hold up to 25 lbs. of meat each. (If cooking a turkey remove 1 grill and you get more space.) Remember to spray these with vegetable cooking spray like Pam and it makes clean up a lot easier.
The dome cover has a heat indicator (temperature gauge) which reads 3 things Warm, Ideal, and Hot! Keep it at Ideal by adding or taking out the charcoal. We had no problem with this. It took about 20 minutes after lighting the charcoal putting the meat on and closing the lid for it to reach "ideal" and stayed that way pretty much the whole time.
We’re Sssmokin!
After deciding we would try the babyback ribs first (this took less time at 4-5 hours than the brisket at 10 hours. We will try that at another time.) we set up the grill and added the charcoal (10 lb. bag)which came free with the smoker. The charcoal had hickory wood in it so it was not necessary to add chunks of wood. Normally you would add 3 or 4 3" thick chunks of your favorite wood (which you can buy at barbecue stores.) You have to soak the wood for 20 minutes in water so it won’t catch on fire. If you don’t have time or forget to do this wrap the wood in foil and poke several holes and it will work great.
We put the water pan in the bottom and added the water, (you can use wine, juice, or beer.) dropped in the grills, and placed the meat 2 inches apart 0n the top and bottom racks.
It continued smoking for 2 hours and then stopped. The heat was fine so my husband wrapped 3 pieces of hickory and placed them in the charcoal. Within 5 minutes it started smoking again. After 2 1/2 hours of smoking it looked done so we cut it open and it was done. They were a mahogany color and looked just like the ones at our favorite restaurant. I was excited!
We had also thrown on a piece of Salmon for my mom (She does not like ribs.)and it even tasted like the smoked salmon you buy at the store and pay dearly for!
I was definitely impressed with this. It had actually worked! I cannot wait to try brisket, chicken, and we already have plans to smoke a turkey on Thanksgiving! I think my hubby will be the one to get up at 2 am to start the smoker. After all it is his! haha
The clean up was easy, but I think if we would not have sprayed it with cooking spray the ribs would have stuck.
I think this would be excellent for hunters and fisherman. Even a backyard novice like me managed to make a scrumptious rib dinner. If you like barbecue or smoked meat you should try this. Smoking your own salmon alone could save you a lot of money!
