Just like one of the other reviewers my old gas grill (about 3 yrs. old!) had fallen apart and I needed another grill. Although my gas grill was convenient I missed that taste one can only get from charcoal and/or wood so I decided to go back basics.

As I was doing research looking for the best buy I remembered an old clam shell grill owned by my best friend’s father. His father had owned the grill since the 60’s after he got out of the military. Apparently the military had bought thousands of these things for use around the world. I started searching the net and, presto, there it was…The Portable Kitchen made right in Little Rock, AR. I paid $200 for the grill, already assembled, at a local hardware store.

I can’t say enough good about the PK. It is easy to use and cooks great. You can grill and smoke with it by making simple adjustments with the dampers on the top and bottom. After just a few uses you get the hang of the it. Then, all you do is put in the charcoal, give it 20 minutes to turn white, throw your burgers/steaks/chicken on the grill and shut the lid (any flames usually die right out). Give the meat a few minutes, open the lid, flip the meant and close the lid. Next time you open the lid the meat is ready. It really is that easy.

The grill is solid aluminum and, though very sturdy, is fairly light. It has a retro look that some may not like but it doesn’t bother me. I have several friends who have bought these grills since I bought mine and I’ve not heard a single complaint. I don’t believe you can go wrong with the PK.
