Although a gas grill heats up more quickly and there are models with more gadgets and dials than my dashboard this kettle grill by Weber makes a great barbeque. A kettle grill of this size is good for small barbeques, my husband and I fire it up for just ourselves. It works for larger groups and tons of burgers and dogs as well. It easily fits shish kebob skewers along with other items too.
This particular model is the stripped down basic Weber model and it is a bargain at about $60-$80 unassembled. The assembly isn’t very hard so don’t fall for the extra assembly charges some stores charge that push this model above $100. It is a very sturdy grill and a very simple one. There is a rotating propeller grate at the bottom to regulate air flow and allow removal of ash. There is a bottom grate for indirect cooking as well as a top grill for direct heat cooking. The lid has adjustable air flow regulator as well that just slides some holes at the top open or closed. Assembly requires you to screw in some handles, attach the legs and assemble the propeller at the base–not really a problem it took my husband about 15-20min.
A charcoal grill gives great taste to meat and veggies. It also allows the option for cooking with wood chips to get the taste mesquite if you add chips to your grill prior to cooking. Some people argue for gas or propane but I feel that there are more options with this grill. It is simple, versatile, mobile and easy to store. It doesn’t require propane tanks or a gas line. We can even fit it into our backseat for beach BBQs.
Great for beginners, people with small backyards or those that just like the taste of charcoal grilled food.
***Note to charcoal users***
If you hate the taste of lighter fluid there is an alternative. There are charcoal starter cans on the market that light charcoal with burning newspaper. The thing looks like a big tin beer mug with holes in the base. It is basically a cylinder of metal with a handle and a grate at the bottom. Fill with charcoal, stuff newspaper in the bottom and light. Within 10-15 min all your charcoal is white hot and you are ready to go. This method is a faster way of starting coals than using lighter fluid as well.
