Through the years we have had several grills. The first ones were hand me downs from family members who had purchased something new for themselves. Most of them didn’t last long as they were pretty worn out to begin with. Eventually, we decided to buy one for ourselves. We chose a Weber charcoal grill with about a 22" grill. We have had it for many years now, with the simple replacement of the larger top grill. It was shot from so much use but replacement was inexpensive and certainly better than purchasing a whole new unit.
We have cooked lots of steaks, hamburgers, and chicken on it using the direct method of heat. Finally we got brave and cooked a brisket using the indirect method. It is wonderful in the summer to have a roast with such good flavor without having to heat up the kitchen. I package the leftover roast in freezer ziploc bags in meal sized portions. It makes a quick meal, warmed up in minutes along with some instant mashed potatoes. Almost faster than tv dinners and taste is out of this world.
The small grill at the bottom holds the coals so that they are not resting on the bottom surface of the kettle. I think that extends the life of the Weber as it is not subjected to the red hot coals burning into it each time it is used. Although the aluminum tray for catching the ashes is lightweight, it has never had to be replaced. We live in windy country and often the wind will keep rattling the aluminum tray, making it hard to sleep. Simple solution,we just place a brick in it to weigh it down. The only drawback we have found is when the weather has a high moisture content. No matter how tightly I store the charcoal (even name brand), it seems to absorb the excess moisture and doesn’t want to light. This isn’t a failure on the Weber’s part, just an inconvenient problem.
There are vents in the bottom of the kettle and in the lid. While you are cooking, you can control the temperature inside by adjusting the vents. I think you can save money on charcoal with the Weber, because when you finish cooking, you simply close the vents which kills the fire and saves the leftover charcoal for the next time. The Weber is a great grill if you like to cook with charcoal. They are well worth the purchase price as it is a quality product that will give you service for many years to come.
