I purchased the Masterbuilt smoker from Bass Pro for $170 which is a good price when compared to other similar type smokers. I bought it after reading Epinions reviews and these are my comments:
After reading the simple setup instructions, I realized I was missing the Wood Chip Holder and Grease Tray. I called the toll free number and they sent them to me the next day.
When I fired it the first time, the first thing that came apart was the door gasket. I tried to snap it into place but it finally tore from trying to stretch it over the door pin holes. (very poor design) Having read the Epinions reviews, I was not surprised. I went down to our local Home Depot searching for anything I could use for a door gasket. I settled for Frost King X-treme Rubber Weather Seal #V25G, $5.37. I removed the door from the smoker and applied the adhesive gasket following the instructions on the gasket’s box. I then applied the other half of the gasket around the edge of the cabinet to meet the door gasket. I tested the unit at it’s highest temperature setting of 275F with 3 ounces of wood for over 2 hours. It tested perfect. The adhesive did not come loose and it does not get hot enough to damage the gasket.
Another minor problem I encountered was the wood chip loader. It does not fit properly and it is hard to turn. I reformed the cylinder to align front to back and it is now working OK.
In all, this is great buy and after several uses I am well pleased. This is an outdoor cooker not a household appliance, so you can expect some minor problems.
The timer/thermostat is easy to set and use. Before each use, if you cover the drip pan and smoke box with aluminum foil, you can save some time cleaning.
I do not use the water bowl, my recipes do not require it. if you regulate your cooking times and temperatures, your food will not dry.
