Coleman Roadtrip Grill Important Safety Information Coleman RoadTrip Grill 9941768 I purchased the Coleman Roadtrip Grill as a gift for my husband in December 2004. I can't say enough good things a...
I bought this grill for camping and for home use. We went through many portable gas grills and also several large grills. I felt the Coleman Roadtrip LXE would be the perfect answer. I bought it for my husband for Father’s Day but had to give it to him early so we could try it out. I set it up myself in about ten minutes.
I did a lot of research and was very excited to find the Roadtrip at my local Menards on sale. However, it is not the same Roadtrip that I have been reading reviews on. The LX has different features than the LXE and the LXE is generally cheaper priced. Some of the changes Coleman made to the LXE were:
1) To make it even easier to transport, the legs on the LXE fold down flat with one end being the handle and the other being wheels for easy transport.
2) The LXE comes with 2 grill plates with the option of buying griddles through the company. The LX comes with one grill and one griddle with the option of buying more.
3) One very important difference between the two grills is that the LX’s grill plates are made with a teflon-like non stick surface which is dishwasher safe. The LXE’s grill plates are made of porcelain coated cast iron and are not dishwasher safe.
4) Also, with the LX you put water in the grease pan but not with the LXE - I’m not sure which one is better because I have only tried the LXE model but customer service stated that the LX is more for low heat cooking and the LXE is made for the higher heats. I did have trouble with BBQ chicken sticking on the grill and had a hard time getting it off. I was told to try non-stick spray next time. I was using low heat at the time. The LXE gets very hot!
5) Another difference is that the LXE cannot be taken off the legs for tabletop use - at least not that I’m aware of.
6) The last difference worth noting is that you cannot close the lid while cooking on the LXE model. I find this an inconvenience due to the fact that I think it helps the meat cook on the inside faster.
The grill heats up and cools down nicely, with 285 sq and 20,000 btu it has a lot more power than most portable grills. When I used the non-stick spray and cleaned up as soon as the grill cooled down it was much easier to clean. The grill plates are removable and small enough to fit in the kitchen sink. So far I have only cooked the BBQ chicken and steak last night which turned out perfect.
