Cooking out on the grill is one of my favorite types of entertaining. My wife and I enjoy few things more than having a few close friends over for an evening of good food and pleasant conversation. While Mrs. Strategery whips up a sumptuous banquet in the kitchen, I gladly pitch in and do the grilling in the backyard.
The Weber One Touch Silver Grill is a very basic utilitarian charcoal grille. The grill consists of a black pot bellied kettle that rests on three metal legs arranged as a tripod. Large wheels are attached to the two forward legs for easy mobility. The bottom part of the kettle is where you put your charcoal. The circular 22 inch grill rest snugly atop this portion of the grill. A large lid with wooden handle fits over and encloses the kettle bottom. An ash catcher fits below the kettle.
We have had our grill for several years; I’d say nearly ten. We have given the Weber One Touch only minimal maintenance yet it has held up remarkably well. We keep the grilling surface cleaned and have pretty much neglected the rest of the unit. We do not take it in during the winter and it only has the slightest bit of rusting on the legs. It is a remarkable durable and well designed unit.
Great design and durability are important but flavor is the main thing. I know there is a great rivalry between gas grills and charcoal grills. I prefer charcoal grills for several reasons. First is of course, the taste. I just happen to really enjoy the special taste of a good piece of meat grilled out over the coals. Secondly, I appreciate the reliability of my grill. Its ingenious design make it impervious to the mechanical breakdown it’s gas burning cousins are known for. Thirdly, I find the Weber easier to grill with. That may get a raised eyebrow from my gas grillin’ brethren, but all I have to do is wait for the coal to get just right. I don’t have to worry with any buttons or knobs.
The final reason that I prefer my $60 grill to a $400+ gas grill is price. I feel like I’ve come out way ahead especially when you consider the respective life expectancies. We gave my brother and his former wife a nice gas grill as a wedding present. After about three years it was shot (the grill ).
As much as we love our grill, there are a few minuses. the wheels are fairly cheap and rolling the grill from place to place can be a challenge. I have to light the coals in the center of the back yard. Once the coals have become red hot I like to have the grill alongside the deck for convenience. This is a dangerous ten foot journey. I keep a hand on each of the grills handles but it is still a relief to arrive deck side. Another feature that I believe could be improved upon is the vents on the top and bottom that allow you to control the amount of smoke in the kettle. There is just a small tab on each. You should be very careful when adjusting these or you may get burnt.
Yes, there are a couple of feature that could be improved upon. But for $60 you get a durable and very usable grill that is a pleasure to use. Ours has been a center piece on many festive occasions. Many otherwise drab and uneventful evenings have been turned into memorable events with a little barbeque sauce and some ribs. I would recommend this grill to anyone that likes to cookout and enjoys that special barbeque flavor.
