I live in a one-bedroom, second floor apartment. I also love grilled food — to me, it is the taste of summer. For a long time I thought these two things were incompatible. My apartment is so small I have no room for a big grill, and even if I had the storage space I would not want to lug the thing up and down the stairs. Plus, I usually only eat with a significant other, so I had no desire to fire up a huge grill for two people. I had just about decided that grilling would have to wait until I had a home and backyard of my own, when I discovered the Weber Smokey Joe grill.

The thing is a dream. I got it as a gift for my significant other, and we have gotten a tremendous amount of use out of it.

PROS of the Smokey Joe

1) Small

The Smokey Joe is a miniature Weber grill, with a round cooking surface 14.5 inches in diameter. This is the perfect size for two people. We can grill two whole trout on it; or six shish kebabs; or two servings of asparagus and two ears of corn. We can grill portobello mushrooms, chicken breasts, or hamburgers for two. It is simply perfect for two adults.

2) Sturdy

I looked at all the small grills and hibachis in the store, and I liked the Smokey Joe the best. Some of the hibachis were smaller, but they looked flimsy and unsteady on their feet to me. Plus, I know Weber from cooking on larger grills at other people’s homes. I grew up cooking on a large Weber grill, and know them to be a good, reliable brand. I was not disappointed.

3) Durable

We have used the grill for several summers now and have not had a single problem. We are no experts, but the grill is indestructible even in our hands!

4) Price

At $30, you can’t beat the price. You get a lot of bang for your buck here. If you are cooking for two and are strapped for cash, then the Smokey Joe is an excellent buy.

CONS of the Smokey Joe

There are very few cons of this grill, and all are easily overwhelmed by the pros. But here they are anyway:

1) Short

The grill is quite short, so you will have to bend over it if you put it on the ground. This is really just a side-effect of having such a compact build, and if it were larger it would be harder to store. Nevertheless, if you have back problems or if you can’t bend over very well, you might want to look into a taller grill. Alternatively, you could put the grill on a step, or on a very sturdy table. I get nervous if my hot coals are not resting near the ground, but that may work for you.

2) Can’t expand

Again, this is merely a consequence of the grill’s delightful small size, so it is hardly fair to point this put as a downside. But here goes: the grill is really perfect for only two people. If you add a third person it is a really tight squeeze. If you have more than two people you have to cook in batches, and that can be difficult to juggle. It is also harder on the grilling person, who has to stand over the grill while everyone else is eating the first batch of food. So, if you have more than two people in your family, or if you intend to entertain on a regular basis, such a small grill may not work for you.

CONCLUSION

I highly recommend the Smokey Joe for cash-strapped single people or couples who love to grill. It is small, sturdy, durable, and cheap.
