Why Purchase a Portable Charcoal Grill?
Our old charcoal grill collapsed from rust and we were looking for a replacement. We prefer charcoal over other fuel as its more convenient not to have to carry and refill the containers. We chose a portable since it would fit into a regular sized car, and because its a cheaper entry price compared with the regular sized grills. We would be happy to upgrade to a larger size later.
Why Did We Purchase a Weber Charcoal Go-Anywhere Grill?
Our local shop (”Barbeques Galore”) carries a wide range of Weber grills, and we were shown these as well as another brand, and also cast iron charcoal grills and a very rough grill ($12). We chose the Weber Charcoal Go-Anywhere Grill as it provides a range of features that make operation and handling easier. We paid $70 and took it home in the boot of our car.
What Do You Get and What Happens Next?
Included in the box is the base with heat proof handles on each end and air holes, cover with air holes and handle, a pair of sliding legs with a clip for use or transport, air hole covers, Weber charcoal cooking instruction and guide book, grill. Assembling took about 10 minutes of “what the …?” followed by about 2 minutes of “hey this fits here!”. After assembly, the grill is ready to transport to the next meal.
Our Experience
Our experience so far is three tries. The guidebook says you need to experiment - meaning, you wont get it right straight away. In fact, this was correct. Firstly, I believe the book underestimates the amount of fuel and fire starters that you need to load on - multiply by a factor of 1.3! Our first try was very slow, and then the second try we loaded a little more fuel and starters to get it going a bit stronger. One problem is that the fuel slipped over the sides to the bottom of the grill making us add some more on top. We cooked marinated chicken pieces the first two times, and they came out beautifully. The third time we tried beef on skewers and this was not so successful, so we need a little more experimentation.
The Joy of the Grill
It wasn’t until we sat down to eat our first meal that I appreciated what we were doing. Firstly, on a hot summer’s night it meant we were cooking outdoors instead of heating up the house. Then, the people who normally cook inside got to take a break (ok a very brief break). Then, we enjoyed the flavor of the food. Finally, we appreciated the whole outdoor summer evening experience, encouraged by our new grill!
