First, let me say that even though I wasn’t the primary user of this smoker, I just loved the results. I didn’t think it was that difficult to use, but my husband did, and he ended up getting rid of this smoker. I helped him set it up and move the meat around as he added charcoal, and I didn’t find it that difficult.

Now, on to my review. We bought this model because of the price, and also because we really like smoked food. My husband thought he would enjoy smoking foods, and he found he did, he just wanted a bigger unit, that could do more, and was easier to use.

Basically, this unit consists of a pan for the charcoal, a pan for the water, and two grills that fit inside, where you put your meats. We found that small items weren’t feasible in this smoker, because they fell through the grills. You could put foil over the grills, but then that would impede the smoke. You could also do them in a pan on the grill, but we didn’t try that. We mostly did larger items like chicken, turkey, and roasts. They all came out very well, tender, juicy, and delicious. Most all were pretty blackened on the outside.

The biggest problem with this grill is having to add charcoal if you’re doing a large item that takes a long time to cook. There’s a small door at the bottom, but it’s very hard to add the charcoal through it. Usually, my husband ended up taking the whole thing apart, adding the charcoal, and putting it back together, which is difficult when it’s hot, and you also lose a lot of your built up heat.

That’s the main reason my husband got tired of this smoker. He’s looking for one that’s electric, and that holds more food than this unit, so you can do more at once. The hard part? Finding one that’s affordable, and still high quality. He’s searching now.

Don’t expect to get this absolutely clean after the first smoke. We lined all the pans with foil, but you still get some residue from the charcoal that just won’t come off. The grills are chrome, and fairly easy to clean, but didn’t fit in my dishwasher.

Personally, I wish we’d kept the smoker, at least until we found a replacement. I miss smoked turkey, it’s absolutely the best! I bought a small stovetop smoker that I’d seen on Emeril’s TV show, and it’s fun, but not big enough for anything but small items. They taste good though! I’ll review that item if Epinions ever adds it to the site.

Until then, if you’re adventuresome, and enjoy smoked foods, you’ll probably get along fine with this grill. Like most “starter” items, if you really get into smoking, you’ll probably outgrow this smoker, and want to move on to something bigger and easier to use. If you use this occasionally, you’ll probably find it works just fine for you!
