My husband and I did not even have to pay the big requisite thirty bucks for our Smokey Joe. David won his as a prize for his entry for his old company’s safety slogan contest. Feel free to plagiarize his inspiring motto: "Better to lose a minute than an eye." The irony of winning a mini grill was not lost on us.
I am going to swim against the tide and not recommend this adorable little grill. I have highly recommended all of the reviews I read that raved about Smokey Joe. I think the other writers are thorough and give a good perspective. From my point of view, however, a super low price tag is not enough to make me swear by any product. I do want to love what I buy even if it costs next to nothing.
The Smokey Joe is so small that my three year old has to bend over to play with it. No, I do not let him near it while we are cooking, and I do try to keep it away from him at all other times as well, but anyone with kids knows how attractive everything is to them that they should distinctly not play with.
The grill is not only short, but also has such a small cooking surface that you can only hope to make one course for two people in any amount of time that could be considered reasonable. The good side of this is that if you want a tiny grill for tailgate parties, the Smokey Joe may be just the little buddy you have been dreaming of.
This grill is solidly constructed and cooks fine, so I do not have any complaints about the quality of the cooker. After using it a few times, however, we retreated back into the house to use the oven broiler. The broiler heats faster, cooks faster, is easier to keep clean, has a larger cooking area, and is cheaper and safer to use.
We were disappointed in the Smokey Joe because we expected to be able to cook faster and were disappointed in how uncomfortable it was to use such a small grill. Obviously, you do know how small it is when you see it in the store, but it is hard to imagine how inconvenient its diminutive stature is until you use it.
I would only recommend this grill to someone who cooks for one, is determined to cook outdoors, is extremely low on cash, and has a miniscule appetite. I thought that the Smokey Joe would be good for us because we are primarily vegetarian and will never do a lot of barbecuing. We do like to grill fish, tofu, vegetables, and kebabs, but from now on, we’ll stick to the indoors until we get a full size grill.
