I bought the Weber One Touch Gold about 4 years ago to do a Thanksgiving turkey when everyone came to my house. Not knowing any better, I bought the Gold over the less featured models because of the ash catcher. In retrospect it was definitely the right decision.
This bbq cooks absolutely great. For starters (no pun intended), I got one of the chimney charcoal starters that doesn’t need any lighter fluid. It starts the coals fast and the food doesn’t taste like kerosene. Just wad up some newspaper, but it in the bottom, coals on top and light. Come back in 20 minutes and the coals are ready to go.
I usually barbeque meat slowly so it gets more flavor. If you’re into fast cooking big slabs of meat with mega-BTUs of heat, you’ll probably be happier with a big gas grill. If you can wait an hour or more to cook a chicken, turkey or roast to perfection without having to do much of anything except smell it cooking every 45 minutes or so (and maybe add a few more coals), then this guy is for you.
The grill size is big enough to cook anything smaller than a small cow. I’ve used it to cook hamburgers with direct heat and you can easily get 15 or more burgers on at the same time.
If you’re like me and have to work for a living, never have enough time and plan / prepare meals at the last minute sometimes, you’ll probably also want a gas grill for the instant gratification. This was a second barbeque for me, and after this, I’m planning to buy a Weber gas barbeque to replace my 12 year old Sunbeam gas grill when it finally bites the dust (or rust). Based on how well the Weber is built and lasts, I expect it to easily last 15 to 20 years with only minor care. So far I haven’t had to replace any parts, and everything works as well as the day I bought it (except I know how to use it better).
If you haven’t cooked much with a Weber charcoal grill, it will take some practice until you get it down right. The more you do it and experiment, the better the food will come out. I’ve gotten hooked on the beer can chicken recipe on the weber web site, and each time I make it now it seems a little better than my previous ones.
