Having been a dedicated student of BBQ-ing, grilling, and campfire cookery in general for many years in this land of outdoor living called Arizona, I, like alot of other folks became a hardcore WEBER fan a long time ago. I’ve had a GENESIS for about 10 years now and that has been my main media for grilling since I got it - after using the "kettle" before that….yada, yada, yada…..
When I first saw the portable Weber "Go Anywhere", I thought it was a knock-off copy or something. Why would the front-runners of BBQ-ing bother to make a dinky, little unit like that? The one I happened to be looking at was a charcoal unit at that! Can’t be a real WEBER! No way! Oops….there it was….shiny black with those funny-looking wrap-around chrome bars-or-something (what are those, anyway?) I scoffed. Cute little thing - probably can’t cook worth a damn, though….Oops….
Okay, I bought the gas model. I mean what’s $50, and if I’m going to go small-size, I want GAS - not charcoal - and it IS a WEBER! Come on…what the hell…well, as it turns out, there are several really nice features about this little mini-Weber. Boy, was I wrong….
#1 - Like its competitors, you can use just about any propane source for the fuel. The Coleman, green bottle is the most widely used - but in a pinch (like a Sunday or something when everyone is closed), unscrew your propane torch head from its hand-bottle and use it for the fuel. No problem.
#2 - The lid has heat vents in it. Nice for ventilating the cooking chamber.
#3 - The cooking grid is high-quality chrome and easy to clean.
#4 - The burner itself is made by Weber and it’s that smooth-lite design that whispers as it catches when the electric spark igniter (also of high Weber quality) clicks on.
#5 - The uniquely Weber feature on this unit is the vented "Flavorizor Tent" (my term) - a solid 1-piece of heavily enameled steel that replaces charcoal, char-rock, etc. This odd-shaped piece is obviously the key to the whole design of this unit. You never have to clean it - simply scrape off the burn-on and residue after cooking with either a flat-bladed whatever tool or a wire brush. Takes seconds - and your ready for the next fire.
#6 - The curved wrap-around "legs" serve a dual purpose: 1) when closed for storage, they hold the lid tightly shut forming a compact, easily-carried unit, and 2) when set up for use, they make a stand for the unit that raises it sufficiently above whatever surface it’s on to keep it cool during cooking. You could easily cook on a good table with this unit without worrying about heat damage.
#7 - The cooking grid area is large enough to easily grill for 4-6 people (depending upon individual appetites). I have cooked with the lid on or off and in windy or inclement weather conditions, the lid-on approach does really well with no burning or over-heating.
#8 - Even while hot, the cool carry-handle still allows comfortable movement of the grill if necessary, and for clean-up, simply immerse the cooking grid in water for awhile and clean with your everyday pot scrubber to remove any burned-on material. Very easy. Then replace the grid, snap the legs into place over the lid, and put it away….
When you don’t feel like firing up the big-daddy grill for a BBQ for 2 or a last-minute idea, THIS IS THE ONE!
