We have had a lot of beautiful weather here in Florida lately. There is nothing better than grabbing some picnic foods and taking them out to the springs and enjoying the water and a bit of grilled foods with family and friends. I had a small problem though. The guys like to get together and bring a trailer over and load up my HUGE smoker/grill and lug that bad boy out to our picnic area. It takes about 6 strong men to load it up, and by the time they are done lifting it, they might as well hang it up, they look as if they are all spent. I enjoy my mother of all cookers, but it is a pain to load, and unload. This is suppose to be a relaxing time, why bother killing yourself lugging this item around? In addition, my cooker uses logs to cook with, this means that it holds heat for a very long time. Its just not practical. No one is getting any younger here, so after convincing everyone to try an easier way, I went out and purchased the Marsh Allan 86851 Grill.

Description of Product

This product is about 22 inches in height and 18 inches in diameter. It is lightweight, and what I would consider to be a “disposable,” type of grill. It comes with a flimsy stand that reminds me of those little tv tables my grandmother used to use to hold up her tv dinners while watching her football games on tv. It grill reminds me of a simple pan with metal handles that have three inserts you attach removable grill top too. the grill top is lightweight, easy to bend, and very flimsy. It sort of has a coat hanger type feel to it.

My Experiences

Well, after the guys laughed at me, I was set up and ready to add and fluid before they got their last chuckle in. Was it a huge time saver compared to my regular cooker. I was able to set this grill up by myself and any child could have put this grill together. Set up was easy, fast, and not back breaking. The grill was up, charcoaled, and lit within 5 minutes, and ready to start cooking in about 30 minutes.

What I hated about this product

Sure I hated being accused of having a wimpy grill..lol. That day we grilled hot dogs, burgers, and steaks. The hot dogs kept rolling off the grill. I ended up losing a few. The steaks and burgers were a bit more steady and easy to work with. It was harder to keep control of the temperatures, because with this grill there is no cover. Don’t try and pick up the top rack because the legs are very flimsy and its a pain to try and reassemble the top to the pan without burning yourself. Don’t accidentally bump into this grill. You have to be very careful and keep this grill away from children. It is extra easy to tip over because it is so lightweight. Be careful when turning your hot dogs because they can all roll off the grill before you can blink an eye.

I like to cook bone in chicken when I grill. It is really not very practical to use the Marsh Allan. I can’t get that deep smoke flavor like I do with my smoker. Its harder to grill/bbq thicker cuts of meat or poultry. The outside seems to cook a lot faster than the inside. I can’t overload this grill down with massive amounts of chicken like I can with my smoker. In fact, I am only allowed to grill small portions at a time. One reason I won’t overload this grill down, is because of the weight of the poultry. I am afraid it won’t hold that much and the legs of the grill will not support it.

If your food sticks and you have to try and pry it off, it can be a pain because this grill is not very sturdy. I would recommend only grilling light items.

Things I loved about this Grill

Set up

Set up was fast, easy, and non-back breaking. This grill is easy to travel with and care for. Each piece snaps in place. One person can easy set this grill up in a matter of minutes. This grill is perfect for travel.

Price

I am a do it right, or do it cheap as possible type of gal. This grill was only 6 bucks. You can’t beat the price, especially if you don’t grill all the time and just want to grill maybe once or twice per season. Why spend all that extra money on something you may only use a few times? In my eyes I consider this a “disposable,” grill. Its not meant to last forever. I have used my maybe 6 times, and it may last one more time and then I will dispose of it. For 6 dollars, and no fuss, I would purchase another grill like this.

Space and Storage

This grill will easy fit in the back of your truck or trunk of your car. This product easy takes apart, and folds up completely. It takes up very little room in my shed.

Cleaning

Dump the pan when it cools. A bit of steel wool and detergent will clean the grill basket and your done. Be extra careful not to bend any of the parts, because they can be a pain to try and assemble the grill again if they are bent. I don’t do anything special for this grill to upkeep it because it is so inexpensive. It can be easy replaced.

Overall?

For the price and the convenience this is a perfect item, in spite of the durability. I will be a repeat purchaser and would highly recommend this item just for that factor. If you don’t have an army to cook for, this is the perfect grill.
