Yesterday was Thanksgiving and our family was excited to finally try a deep fried turkey. My mother purchased a new Masterbuilt Turk N Surf Electric Fryer from QVC so we were all ready to go .
So at least we thought We had a planned time to eat but everything was going smooth so we decided to cook the turkey a little earlier and have an early dinner. It was a good thing we decided to do this because after we started our Masterbuilt Turk N Surf Electric Fryer nothing went smooth after that.
For those not familiar with frying Turkeys it has become the latest craze. Until the Electric Fryer came out the only other way to really cook one was with a Propane fryer which if wasnt done right could be quite hazardous. We do have a propane fryer but lack the guts to light it up.
The Masterbuilt Turk N Surf Electric Fryer was ideal for us because no propane was needed. It works with a regular 110 outlet and is to be used indoors or under a covered shelter only. Some other great features that came with this are..
~~Digital Panel with timer and 4 different cooking modes
~~Drain spout with additional Tube
~~Fry Basket with clip on to drain oil from food in basket
~~Little Hanger looking thing to lift fry basket out of fryer
~~Glass lid with steam vents
~~Fryer holds up to 14 pound turkey
~~Over heating automatic off feature.
~~ Do not over fill line
After reading the instruction book we figured we were ready to go. We decided to cook this outside on our covered deck. I personally cant stand the smell of frying oil so outside was the perfect place for it. We put in Mode 1 which is the Turkey Mode (Mode 2 is Turkey Breast, Mode 3 is for seafood and Mode 4 is your manual mode). The unit automatically preheats itself, which takes approximately 55 minutes and get the oil up to 400 degrees. Now when the fryer is preheated the readout should say ready then show the temperature. This where you can also set the timer by weight so guessing isn’t needed.
Well while preheating we saw it had 15 minutes to go and when it should have had only 5 minutes we went to check it one more time only to find t hat it completely loss power. I pushed every button I could find and nothing..It was dead. I then unplugged it and started reading the manual again. I couldnt find anything relating to this problem other then it might have overheated so I need to remove the heating element and hit the rest button then reattach it and try again. Well..I did that and still nothing was happening. I then checked out their website and they did have a little blurb about it losing power and to pretty much follow those instructions that I mentioned above but restart it using the manual mode. Okay..problem was, I couldnt get it on to go into manual mode.
After all that, we had to think of alternative way to cook this and we ended up cooking in the Rotisserie after we cut it in half. Yes, it was a sad Thanksgiving for us..
While our turkey was cooking in its alternate method which was probably over an hour after the Masterbuilt Turk N Surf Electric Fryer went down I decided to try the fryer one more time and wouldnt you know it powered up..after it cooled down.
I know I could give this one more shot and retry to cook something in it but I just was so disgusted with it. My main fear was getting my poultry ready only to find out it shut down again in the last 5 minutes. I couldnt bring myself to do it. I even tried to call customer service (while crossing my fingers that they would be open on Turkey day) and then again today but they are closed for a 4-day weekend.
I did have the pleasure of draining out 2 gallons of oil which was probably one of the easiest things yet with this. I put the fryer on the counter and attached the hose to the spout and placed the oil containers underneath and let it drain out. Majority of the unit can be submersed other then the control panel (you know electronics and water dont mix). Since my unit didnt actually have anything cooked in it, I was really easy to clean up.
I decided last night to return it to QVC because I cant believe that MasterBuilt didnt put anything about this possibility in the manual. It is on their website so they obviously know there is a potential for this to happen. If I had read that it could shut down, I would have tested it out in advance to try and find a way around it.
All in all, from what I read, I have the only bad review about this so I cant really not recommend it. The Masterbuilt Turk N Surf Electric Fryer really is neat it just appears our might be a lemon.
