My husband and I live in a second story apartment with a wooden balcony. Because it’s second story, the only place we can put a grill is on the balcony. But, since it’s a wooden balcony, we can’t use a regular full-size grill. A full-size would take up too much room, plus any flare-ups would cause problems with the wooden railings of the balcony.
The problem is, my husband loves grilled food. He’s a meat-eater. So he was always wanting a grill. Yes, we have the George Foreman grill for indoor grilling, but it’s just not the same. I didn’t want a charcoal grill because it’s too hard to take care of one of those in an apartment (charcoal lighting, then tossing the used briquettes, etc) I wanted a gas grill. Then one day when I was at the hardware store, I decided to check and see if they had the mini gas grills. I knew Weber made mini charcoal ones, but wasn’t sure if they had gas ones. Well they did. Fifty dollars later, I was headed home with my new Weber Go-Anywhere gas grill.
My husband was so excited when he saw the box! He wanted to put it together right away. It needed to be assembled, but it took only a few minutes. You just have to attach the legs, the gas tubing, the ignitor switch and the leg lock piece so the legs don’t move. The whole thing from start to finish took less than 5 minutes. Boy, I like this grill already!
The Go-Anywhere comes with the instruction manual and recipe booklet. When I bought the grill, I completely forgot to buy the mini propane tank to attach to the grill. So hubby was sent back to the store to get propane. You just screw the canister on the grill, turn the heat control knob to high, and press the ignition switch a couple times until the flame jumps. then turn it down to the right level. You have to preheat the grill for about 5-10 minutes. I usually heat it with the lid on so the grate heats up nicely.
I have noticed that the food usually cooks faster on the edge of the grill, on the opposite side of the propane canister. So I usually put the thicker pieces of meat there to cook. Veggies and thinner pieces of meat go more towards the propane canister.
The grill come with a Flavorbar, which is a tent shaped metal piece that goes over the gas pipe/flames. It heats up, distributing the heat over the whole grill. When the juices and fat drip on the Flavorbar, they evaporate and create a bit of smoke, which adds that grilled outdoorsy flavor to your food. We also added some ceramic briquettes along the Flavorbar for more even heat.
To cook whole pieces of meat, like roasts, the recipe book suggests using a drip pan to hold the meat. That way the meat cooks in its own juices. They also recommend using the lid for slower cooking. I usually cover thicker steaks for a couple minutes to "steam" them a bit.
Cleanup is very easy. The book recommends using a grill brush to clean the cooking grate, then wiping it with paper towels. They do not recommend washing it with soap and water after each use. Once a year, they suggest taking the grill apart and cleaning the gas pipes and the Flavorbar.
Overall, I really recommend this grill. It’s very sturdy, while not being too heavy. It can be easily traveled with, just by folding the legs and putting the lid on the grill. For apartment dwellers, it’s the perfect size. I keep it on the balcony on a large metal cookie sheet, and I have not had any problems with flareups. (But I always keep a water bottle close by, just in case). If you are looking for a small grill that you can use for just about everything, consider the Go-Anywhere Gas Grill.
